WARNING, GRAPHIC PHOTOS : Woman with face tumour gets transplant

A 26-year-old Polish woman disfigured by a huge tumour has received a new face. Prior to the operation, she struggled to chew, swallow or talk.
Joanna was severely deformed by neurofibromatosis – a genetic condition that causes benign tumours to grow along the nerves.
The condition can also cause bone problems, pressure on the spinal nerves, severe pain, learning disabilities and vision and hearing problems. There is no cure for it.
Although many people who have the condition inherit it from one of their parents, up to 50 per cent develop it randomly from a gene mutation before they are born. Despite their alarming appearance, the growths and swellings - called neurofibromas and caused by a growth of cells - are not cancerous or contagious.
Genetics expert Dr Anand Saggar said the facial tumour will not recur because the skin on her new face is from different genes.

Woman unknowingly pregnant for over 40 years

A Colombian woman who was originally thought to be suffering from a stomach bug was found to have a 40-year-old fetus inside her.
The 82-year-old, from Bogota, had what is known as 'lithopedion', or stone baby, when the unborn child develops outside the womb.
According to NTD, Dr Kemer Ramirez of Bogota's Tunjuelito Hospital said that the doctor overseeing the woman noticed something 'abnormal in her abdomen' - and suspected gallstones.
An ultrasound showed nothing then radiography of her abdomen revealed a tumour in her abdominal cavity.
Dr Ramirez explained: 'This happens because the fetus does not develop in the uterus because it has moved to another place.
'In this case, the abdominal part of the woman is not a viable (place) and this is what happened, a calcified fetus because the body is generating defence mechanisms and it is calcified until it stays there encapsulated.'
The patient is thought to have been transferred to another hospital to have the lithopedion removed.

Brain damaged man locked in a cage for over 40 years

Peng Weiqing, 48, has been in the cage in his mother's home in the city of
Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, since the age of six. And while it may seem like an incredibly cruel way to treat your only son, Peng Waimei, says that she did it to protect Weiqing.
Waimei and her late husband locked their son away and have fed him through the bars ever since after a series of health problems as a child.
When Weiqing was still a baby he suffered a high fever, which left him brain-damaged.
'When he was young, quite often he would cut himself with a knife and glass debris.
'Even when walking, he could suddenly fall down and hit his face and make it bleed.
With Weiqing's father now dead and his mother aged 80, Waimei fears for her son when she dies and hopes to find someone to take care of him.

BREAKING NEWS: MANDELA IS DEAD

This is sad news for Africa and the world in general. Freedom fighter, Mandela Nelson has lost his fight with life. This heartbreaking incident also happens on the day the movie 'Mandela' which is an autobiography about his life is being premiered in the Uk. Rip hero! We'll miss you.
Story still developing..more to come.

Former South African president Mandela on death bed and still fighting

Ailing former South African President Nelson Mandela spent almost three months in a Pretoria hospital after being admitted in June with a recurring lung infection. The 95-year-old liberation struggle icon was discharged in September and has been receiving home-based medical attention since then.
'Mandela is not doing well' but is continuing to put up a courageous fight from his 'deathbed', according to his family..His daughter, Makaziwe Mandela, told the South African Broadcasting Corporation in an interview: 'Tata is still with us, strong, courageous. Even for a lack of a better word .... on his `deathbed' he is teaching us lessons; lessons in patience, in love, lessons of tolerance.

UPDATE: ASUU not budging to sack threats by government

Although the government has given an ultimatum to all striking lecturers and issued a sack threat if the deadline is not met, the lecturers have all remained unshaken. They say that until the government does what its supposed to do,they'll stand their ground.
"We shall bow only to what we as academics are convinced will serve the interest of Nigeria and its people, no matter their ethnic, religious or class origins. This is where we stand we shall never be cowed.

Justifying government's plans to sack lecturers, the Public Relations Officer, National Universities Commission, Mallam Ibrahim Yakassai said: "Federal Government has every right to sack ASUU if the union is being unreasonable, just the same way your employer has the right to sack you.
"Government would be justified in sacking lecturers if they do not return to the classrooms, lecturers are not the only ones in the employ of the Federal Government to be causing this kind of headache."

For the ASUU Ibadan Zonal Chairman, Dr Adesola Nasir, government's order for schools to reopen is not the same thing as the academic staff resuming work because the schools were shut down by the management.

"The threat is so primitive in this day and time, especially coming from someone who is from the academic. Rather than worrying how to fill in the over 23,000 short in teaching staff and move the sector forward, government is threatening to sack us.
"We are not bothered by the threat because we are not asking for money for our pockets but for the development of the varsity system. Government keeps complaining that our graduates are not employable yet they don't want to put things in place to make them employable."

The Girl who was always awake and never slept

Christina Speirs, 22, of New York, exercised almost every single day, taught yoga and stayed in top shape. What she thought was a product of drinking too much water turned out to be a cancerous tumor growing inside her.

‘I had a lot of energy,’ Ms Speirs said. ‘I wasn't sleeping... I was always on the go, I was never tired.’
Ms Speirs thought the high amounts of water she was drinking caused her to wake up often during the night, so she did nothing about it until a medical
exam made a shocking discovery.

Doctors discovered last fall that her blood pressure was high, ‘through the roof’ high, but her potassium levels were low – it stumped them.
‘That really freaked me out because them not knowing what's wrong with me, they're doctors, you know?’ Said Ms Speirs.
After ruling out a heart condition, doctors checked her kidneys at the urging of her mother.
The sonogram stumped doctors as well, it appeared she had one combined kidney, throwing the co-ed into further panic as she was whisked to an MRI.
The MRI showed she had two kidneys, but instead she horrifyingly had a tumor almost the size of a grapefruit growing inside her.
‘I was in complete shock,’ Ms Speirs recalled to ABC, saying she called her parents because she needed surgery. ‘Then, I got so upset honestly. I had no idea where this came from.’

Doctors removed the tumor, stage 2 cancer. Described as adrenal cortical carcinoma, the tumor was growing on her liver – it affects one in several hundred thousand people, Ms Speirs’ doctor told ABC.

She is now cancer-free, but takes medication to stay that way. One of the side effects of the medication happens to be drowsiness – she can’t do hot yoga
anymore, but now she can sleep.

New study shows that talking to God boosts Emotional Stability and Self control

Previous findings have shown that when people try hard to control their emotions and thoughts, the risk of aggressive outbursts and binge drinking or eating rises.
New study shows that Praying helps people stay in control of their emotions and behaviour.
People turn to prayer 'as a coping response to the high demands in life' and are rewarded with increased strength and ability to resist temptation, researchers
said.

'A brief period of personal prayer buffered the self-control depletion effect', wrote the team, whose findings are published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology online.

'These results are consistent with and contribute to a growing body of work attesting to the beneficial effects of praying on self-control.'
Praying has already been linked in the past to reduced levels of infidelity and alcohol consumption.

Actor Idris Elba , trapped and terrified in Robben Island prison

Elba begged the authorities that run the notorious former prison, where
Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in captivity, to let him spend a night there.
At first, they refused. ‘But I persisted, it was important,’ he says.
‘Robben Island is a museum now – no one had spent a night in there since the 1980s.'So they took me to one of the punishment cells.' It was exactly the same dimensions as Mandela’s cell [8ft x 7ft] with a
concrete floor and a bucket in the corner.‘Spending the night in there gave me a little taste of what it was like to be locked up in Robben Island for all those years,’ says Elba.
It’s funny, because of insurance they insisted that I take a phone in case I needed to get out.
‘They said, “If you need to, just call. The security guard is about a quarter of a mile away and he will come and open the gates.” So the guy locked the door and I watched him walk away.
'He locked a second door, a third door, and then a fourth. And then he was gone and it was eerily quiet.
‘There was a single lightbulb on in the cell but outside in the walkways it was very dark. It dawned on me that I wasn’t getting out any time soon.
'And then I glanced at my phone and there was no signal!’
It was a long night. Elba admits that there were times when he was seriously
spooked.
‘It was really unsettling and I swear that place is haunted. It’s dead quiet – quieter than you can imagine – and every so often I’d hear a clang or
something knocking against the bars down the corridor. And there was no one else but me there.
‘I was woken by a shaft of really cold air and I thought, ‘Someone is coming in.’ I thought it was coming from the window but it was tiny.
'And at the same time this really big flock of seagulls started flying right above the cell. It was a weird experience.
'It helped me understand a little of the mindset of a man who was incarcerated for so long.’
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is based on the autobiography of the same name, and as well as covering his 27 years in prison examines his decision to advocate violence, against the wishes of the elders who controlled the ANC (African National Congress), making him one of the most wanted men in the country. There are harrowing scenes of his imprisonment on Robben Island.
‘Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom’ is released on January 3.

Chinese authorities build 'baby box' where parents can dump their unwanted babies

Wow! This report is from mail online.
The Chinese authorities have built a box like building where parents can anonymously leave their unwanted children. The building, located in Nanjing, eastern China, will provide a safe place for parents to leave their children - who will then be cared for at a nearby welfare home, according to reports. The space - coined a 'baby box' by local media - will be electronically monitored so that when a baby is left an alarm will go off.Staff of the nearby Nanjing Welfare Home - located five minutes away - will then come to collect the child. The building is air-conditioned and has humidity monitors. It includes an incubator, a bed and a thermometer.
There will be no CCTV - so the parents will be totally anonymous, a report on Shanghaiist has claimed.Staff at the Nanjing Welfare Home hope the building will stop parents from leaving their children in parks or on the streets - where they often freeze to death.
Many feel forced to leave their children due to the government's population control one child policy - introduced in 1979.The news come as the city of Shenzhen has reportedly applied to the Guangdong provincial authorities to pilot such a facility next year.Critics of the scheme have said it will encourage irresponsible parents to abandon their offspring.Zhu Hong, the centre's spokesman said: 'We do this for the sake of the babies lives.'The parents might have to abandon them for unthinkable reasons. But the children are innocent and need to be protected.'So far this year the home has received 160 babies. In August, a horrific image of a newborn baby drowned in a river caused outrage in China after it emerged on local social networking sites. The picture - taken from a river bank in south east China - apparently shows a dead infant wearing a romper suit and a nappy several days after the newborn had been abandoned in the water. The photo has appalled Chinese internet users who have set up an online search for clues to the baby's identity.
China has a one-baby policy, introduced in 1979 to keep the country's population under control, which restricts urban couples to having just one child.Despite egalitarian policies in China, many families hope to have a son to provide for them in their old age.As a result the country has a higher rate of female infanticide and lower ration of female to male births.
